the other day it was scott brown, the senator from massachusetts, who will be leaving in the new congress, but he said a deal was coming from the white house. hearing any idea what it looks like? perhaps a scaled down deal from president obama? >> yeah. i believe we need a big deal, but the more likely possibility, at this point, is it's really focused on a tax deal where they come up with some number between what speaker boehner and president obama talked about, that they address things like alternative minimum tax, and put together a deal that we either try to pass before the end of the year or get agreement to come back right after the first of the year and pass it through both houses. adam: the numbers were something like the president at one point was willing to raise his baht -- bottom line to 400,000. if that's the deal, can you guys, can the men and women in our political leadership pass something before midnight, december 31? >> well, i think so. i mean, and you're going exactly the right direction. if you take what's been put on the table, you got the senate bill, you got the ho

it is a brand new hour of "america's newsroom," hello, everyone, i'm patti ann brown. gregg: and i'm gregg jarrett. lawmakers are -- republican lawmakers are returning to washington, d.c., and they are trying to negotiate something, anything with the house. both sides saying that a few days to cool off over the holiday might be helpful, but there are no signs they're closer to a deal. patti ann: chief white house correspondent ed henry joining us now live in honolulu, hawaii. so, ed, what is the latest? any progress to tell us about? >> reporter: or well, patti ann, really no progress. as gregg was saying, a lot of people thought, well, a cooling-off period, the holidays, maybe this'll get everybody to work together, the president even joking last week about figuring out a way to move all of this forward, but we've been told by white house officials there have been no real phone calls between the president and speaker boehner over the last few days, very little staff contact. so the bottom line is the president is leaving hawaii here tonight, as you suggested, just to

the brown and the gray. what are the differences between them and how are they clashing now that we get closer and closer to the fiscal cliff? >> the brown and the gray is a phrase i've been using for the last few years to describe the two giant generations that will shape american life in the coming decades. the brown is the millennial, the most diverse in american history. over 40% nonwhite. the gray is the aging baby boom which is joining the silent generation in a huge senior cohort that is 80% white. and they have very different political inclinations, preferences and different interests at stake in the fiscal cliff and budget negotiations. on the one hand, taxes verse spending and so does the kind of spending. discretionary spending mostly investments in the future. entitlement spending mostly income security for the older generation. >> so who benefits if we do cross the fiscal cliff? >> i think there is no question that getting the debt and deficit under control is in the interests of younger generat

i'm patti ann browne in for martha maccallum. there is little to no progress reported in making a deal to avert across the board tax hikes for 90% of american households. president obama on his way back to washington right now but not all the lawmakers are there and if congress and the president do not reach a compromise before january 1st many analysts say the economy will slide back into a recession. gregg: mike emanuel is live on capitol hill. mike, any indication of the president's next move? >> reporter: well, gregg, last time we heard the president talk about the this matter he said he was calling on congressional leaders to essentially make sure taxes do not go up on middle class americans. presumably that would be a package that continues the bush tax cuts for those making up to $250,000. he would also like to continue emergency unemployment benefits for two million americans. and beyond that, details are kind of murky at this point. so we await the president to get back to washington. we know that the senate will be back
